What Causes Gum Recession?
Gums recede more from gum disease than for any other reason. It is easy to get gum disease, and millions of Americans have gum disease. You may be at a greater risk of gum disease if you use tobacco. You may also be more at risk for gum disease if you have diabetes. If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes, you are at a greater risk of gum disease. Poor oral hygiene also contributes to gum disease. Some people have receding gums because of overbrushing, or bruxism - which is clenching or grinding your teeth at night. You may even have gum recession because of a tongue or a lip piercing.
What Are Gum Grafts?
There are three types of gum grafts that we use for our patients. First, if you are affected by gum disease, we need to first treat your gum disease by cleaning your teeth and gums, as well as treating the infection. After we treat your gums, we need to give them a little time to heal, and then we can ready your gums for a gum graft.
Connective tissue grafts are one of the most common gum grafts we do. To do a connective tissue graft, we remove tissue from the roof of your mouth. That’s the tissue we use to perform a gum graft. Once we get the needed tissue, we stitch it over your gums that are receding. There are also gingival grafts, which are donated graft tissue from someone else. Usually, we need to do a gingival graft if we need a large amount of tissue for your graft. There are also gum grafts called a pedicle graft. For pedicle grafts, we stretch the tissue over the area we need to graft.
Benefits of Gum Grafts
Gum grafts are amazing. When we perform gum grafts, we are able to save your gums from any more damage. Gum grafts can also work to help you keep more bone mass in your jaws. That way, we can keep your jaw strong and functioning for a long time. We can also use gum grafts to make your teeth not as sensitive. This happens because we use gum grafts to cover up exposed nerves. Grafts also help your gums to look better, which improves the way your gums look when you smile. How great is that?
