Dental Implant Placement

If you are thinking about getting dental implants, you might want to know how dental implants are placed, especially if you are thinking about replacing dentures or bridges. While dentures or bridges are considered a good replacement if you are missing teeth, implants are a part of restorative dentistry that allows you to have a permanent part of your smile back. Let Encinitas Periodontics & Dental Implants give you information the way we place dental implants.

What are Dental Implants?

Scientists created dental implants to revolutionize the practice of restorative dentistry. We wanted to be able to recreate the look and feel of natural teeth - which was impossible to do with dentures. One of the most important reasons implants were created was to save your jawbone from bone loss. You might think that implants don’t have anything to do with your jawbone, but in fact they do. Your jawbone begins to lose bone when there are no teeth to support it. Dental implants screw into your jawbone, which makes your jawbone think there are teeth there. This keeps both your jawbones and your gums strong and healthy.

How Does the Dental Implant Procedure Work?

Before we can do anything else, we need to look at your overall oral health. If your gums are healthy, you have a much better chance for the implant procedure to go well. Does that mean if you have gum disease you are less likely to be a good candidate? No. Not if we treat your periodontal disease first and get your gums as healthy as possible. Once you have undergone treatment, you will be a better candidate for implants.

If you have healthy gums, our next step is to look at the implant site itself. We will need to check it to make sure the site is prepared for implants. If you only need a single tooth implant, we are able to implant it fairly easily. First, we make an incision along your gumline. We then use a special dental screw to screw the implant into your jaw permanently. The screw links your jawbone through your gum to a prosthetic tooth on the top. The prosthetic tooth fits over the screw, and we make sure that it matches your existing teeth, so that no one will know you have an implanted tooth but you.

What If I Have Multiple Teeth Missing?

The process changes a little if you need multiple teeth implanted. We will make more than one incision along your gumline. We will then place screws along your gumline into your jawbone. The number of screws usually equals the number of teeth we need to place. There are procedures available that allow us to place more than one implant on a single screw, such as the All-on-Four® Treatment Concept technique.

If you are concerned that you might need implants, but you aren’t sure how the procedure will work, or whether or not you are a good candidate for an implant technique, we can help. Let us answer your questions. Give Encinitas Periodontics & Dental Implants a call at 760-632-9055, so that we can talk to you about the latest implant procedures.

This Doctor is a true healer!

I had a wonderful opportunity to see Dr. Bembey! She really knows her stuff! I felt like she had my best interests in mind and she took her time and listened with an open mind and an open heart. I have some really tough dental issues, and she completely understood everything that I was going through and was able to guide me in the right direction. So great full of for her kindness and compassion.
